Is Family Mediation Free for Me?
Family mediation is a process that helps couples and families resolve conflicts and disputes in a constructive and non-confrontational way. It can be an effective way to help couples and families come to agreements about important issues such as finances, parenting arrangements, and other matters related to separation or divorce. But can you get free family mediation? Let’s take a look.
What is Family Mediation?
Family mediation is a voluntary process that involves both parties in a dispute meeting with an impartial third party (the mediator) to discuss their issues and try to reach an agreement. The mediator does not take sides or make decisions for the parties; instead, they help the parties communicate effectively and work together towards a mutually beneficial outcome. The goal of family mediation is to help the parties reach an agreement that works for everyone involved.
What Are the Benefits of Family Mediation?
Family mediation can be beneficial for many reasons. It can help couples and families avoid costly court proceedings, as well as reduce stress and conflict associated with disputes. It also allows the parties to have more control over the outcome of their dispute, as they are able to negotiate directly with each other rather than relying on a judge or arbitrator to make decisions on their behalf. Additionally, family mediation can provide an opportunity for healing by helping both parties understand each other’s perspectives better and work towards solutions that are acceptable to both sides.
Can I Get Free Family Mediation?
In some cases, it may be possible to get free family mediation services. Many community organisations offer free or low-cost family mediation services for those who cannot afford private mediators or who do not qualify for legal aid services. Additionally, some employers may offer access to free or discounted family mediation services as part of their employee benefits package. You can also contact your local government or visit the government website to see if you qualify for free or discounted MIAM mediation. To apply for family law orders, you must attend a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM) unless you have a valid exemption. If you are eligible for legal aid, you will get a free MIAM. Otherwise, it will cost between £99 to £140 per person. On attendance of a MIAM, a trained mediator will assess the issues which you seek to resolve to see if they are suitable for mediation and meet the eligibility requirements for the voucher scheme. If your case is eligible, you will be offered a voucher to help pay for mediation.
