We can undertake Legal Aid for Family Mediation work. Legal Aid is provided by the Legal Aid Agency to cover the cost of our family mediation service. If you are eligible for Legal Aid, you will not have to pay us anything for the work we do for you, and our private
charges will not apply to you.

Legal Aid for family mediation cases help families agree arrangements where:

  1. You are getting divorced or separating, and therefore need to sort out financial arrangements, and where you are both going to live
  2. Child arrangements have broken down, and so you are not seeing your children, or arrangements are not working very well
  3. Any dispute following a family breakdown that may end up in court

Family Law Mediation provide legal aid services as a member of the Compass Resolution Network Legal Aid contract.

Legal Aid for mediation is means-tested, so you have to provide evidence of your current financial circumstances to prove you are entitled to free Legal Aid.

If you are eligible, Legal Aid for mediation will cover all your individual mediation costs.

It will also cover costs of the initial appointment and first mediation meeting for the other person, if they are not eligible in their own right.

Eligibility for Legal Aid also enables you to get Legal Aid for legal costs, up to a cost limit.

You may be eligible for Legal Aid for Mediation if you are on a low income or not working.

We can help you start the assessment process before you book an appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Legal Aid for Family Mediation

How soon can mediation start?
Once legal aid eligibility is confirmed, mediation can usually begin within a few working days. Your MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) will help establish if mediation is appropriate for your situation.
Is mediation suitable for cases involving domestic abuse?
It depends. In some situations involving domestic abuse, mediation may still be possible with safeguards in place, such as shuttle or online mediation. The mediator will assess this at the MIAM. If it’s not appropriate, other legal options will be explained.
Do I have to be in the same room as my ex-partner?
No. Shuttle mediation is an option, where you and your ex-partner stay in separate rooms, either in-person or virtually and the mediator goes between you. This is commonly used to reduce conflict.
Can mediation help with arrangements for children?
Yes. Mediation is often used to agree on child arrangements, such as where children live and how contact works. It encourages parents to focus on their children’s needs and avoid court proceedings.
Can mediation help with financial matters?
Yes. Mediation can address financial issues such as property, pensions, debts and maintenance. Legal aid may cover these sessions if you qualify.
What if we don’t agree during mediation?

If mediation doesn’t lead to an agreement, your mediator can provide the necessary signed form (e.g., Form C100 or Form A) so you can make a court application.

What documents should I bring to mediation?
For financial mediation, bring payslips, bank statements, mortgage paperwork and details of debts or assets. For child-related mediation, it’s helpful to bring anything that supports your position or helps explain your concerns.
Is there follow-up support after mediation?
Yes. Additional mediation sessions can be arranged if needed. Mediators can also prepare summaries of any agreements reached and direct you to further legal advice if required.
